Felicity Abram
Fliss was born in Brisbane , however spent her early years in the bush in Central Qld on her family's 20,000acre property. A move to Brisbane when she was three was to ensure that she and her twin brother Geoff were given every opportunity for a good education and give them access to other facilities not available in the bush.
Swimming formed a big part of her early primary school days - with swimming lessons from a young age - along with a keen interest in music and lessons in violin, clarinet and Saxaphone to keep her thoroughly busy. Her swimming stepped up as a 12year old and at her first State Championships was a finalist in the 400m ( alongside among others Alice Mills and Jessica Schipper) Year 8 at Brisbane Girls Grammar School saw her excel in Cross Country and Athletics - her first foray into the world of running. She was also selected in representive teams for Swimming, Athletics, Cross Country and Waterpolo. By the end of year 8 (1999) Felicity had competed in her first Triathlon and at her first National Titles at Devonport ( Under 14 Years) only a few months later was crowned National Champion.
During her secondary school years Fliss went on to win 22 National Titles in Triathlon, Athletics and Cross Country. She won 1500m and 3000m on the track and was the National Cross Cross Country Champion. At 14 years of age she went to Canada representing Australia in the ITU World Aquathon Championships and manged 4th behind Siri Lindley, Sheila Toarmina and Rina Hil. In her final year of school, Fliss went onto win the ITU World Junior Championships in Queenstown - and beat two well know names in triathlon - Vanessa Fernandes ( who finished third) and Maxine Seears ( second) who went on soon thereafter to represent Australia at the 2004 Olympic Games!
A keen runner, she has won the Bridge to Brisbane twice and still holds the Under 15 record at the Gold Coast Marathon 10km at 36.21. Her first and only official half marathon when she was 18 saw her the winner of the Qld Half Marathon in a time of 1hr 16mins. She would like to one day compete in a full marathon.
At 18, in 2005 Fliss was selected in her first National Elite Team for Triathlon and represented Australia at the ITU World Championships in Gamagori and placed 6th. This placing led to her being named ITU "Rookie of the Year in 2005 in her first year of elite representation. At the endof the 2005 season she was ranked 10th in the World.
In 2006 Fliss was honoured to be considered for selection in to the Commonwealth Games Team after the withdrawal of Loretta Harrop - and although competing with an injury finished proudly for her country. She was given the opportunity to experience being part of a major competetion and enjoyed it all immensly. This experience stood her in good stead - as later on in the year ( after recovering from injury) was able to go on and achieve a Bronze Medal in the ITU World Championships in Lausanne September 2006. This has been her biggest achievement in her brief triathlon career and her biggest personal highlight by far! She then went on to win the NoosaTriathlon in October 2006 - once again a very big thrill in her own country with some of the best athletes in the world racing a non-drafting race. She became the youngest Noosa winner in the events history and was also the youngest elite World Championship medalist at 20 years of age.
Fliss is training alongside her great friend Emma Moffat under the watchful eye of Shaun Stephens and has her eye on Olympic Selection later in the year.
